Big Scary. Thelma Plum. Baker Boy. Tash Sultana. Courtney Barnett. What do they all have in common? BIGSOUND – the music industry’s biggest event for emerging talent - has helped to fast track each of their careers. So who’s the next big name to breakthrough? The folks at Levi’s® are hoping it will be one of the winners of this year’s Levi’s® Music Prize.
We all know that getting a big break in the music industry takes more than just raw talent. There’s a large element of luck and a lot of blood, sweat and tears too. Just ask any performer who has pegged their hopes on a sustainable career in the music business. The rewards may be big – fame, fortune and all the attitude you want. But getting there takes big bucks, cos a great YouTube video will only get you so far.
That’s why Stage and Screen is proud to be part of the BIGSOUND - Levi’s® Music Prize juggernaut. With the largest annual prize pool in Australian music, the $120K Levi’s® Music Prize is designed to identify and support Australia’s emerging artists. The competition recognises talented artists which have built significant career momentum via their BIGSOUND experience, but who need a financial leg-up to crack the international market.
The $120K annual prize money is made up of 4 x $25,000 prizes, plus a $5,000 Stage and Screen travel voucher awarded to each of the four winners. As the winning artists are required to commit to either touring, recording or creating new music, the travel voucher provides a much-needed boost to their travel budget.
Selected by a panel of international judges from within the music industry, previous winners include the Teskey Brothers, Amyl & The Sniffers, Stella Donnelly, Alex Lahey, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Hatchie & Emerson Snowe.
From 3 to 6 September 2019 BIGSOUND will feature 147 of Australia’s best new artists, across 18 stages in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley Live Music Precinct. A feast for the ears, BIGSOUND has been dubbed ‘a massive musical speed-dating extravaganza over four nights.’
Apart from the huge talent line-up who will be putting out lots of positive vibes, the 2019 program is bigger and better than ever – with the new Cloudland venue providing expanded facilities. Look out for international music industry presenters, publishers, bookers, label managers, networking events, inspiring micro-workshops and ‘hook up’ sessions designed to get artists face-to-face with industry major players.
To get an idea of the sheer size of BIGSOUND, the 2018 event boasted – 13,561 attendees, 1585 delegates, 153 showcasing artists, 192 conference speakers and 120 international buyers and guests. That makes for one hell of a live music party!
